From unknown to household name ... Yakult Australia's Success Story

The Yakult 5-pack in 1994 The first probiotic product ever to enter the Australian market, Yakult sales, customer loyalty and recognition have grown steadily over 15 years. Australia was the first English-speaking country to produce and sell Yakult fermented milk drink. The success achieved, given that it launched into a completely unknown product category, has been phenomenal.

With an unprecedented and confident advertising campaign that focused on one product, one package and one flavour, Yakult has exceeded expectations for the ten year expansion plan. Yakult Australia established a factory in Dandenong, Victoria in 1993 and in January 1994 began selling Yakult in major supermarkets. Within the first two years Yakult had crept in to the top 20 units in supermarket dairy cases.

The ten-pack was an Australian innovation and was introduced nationally in 2001, due to customer demand. The double pack also features straws, which are especially favoured by young children drinking Yakult.

Yakult celebrated 15 years in Australia in 2009, so it comes as no surprise that most people recognise the Yakult brand and are familiar with our “Everybody Everyday” slogan.

Our dedicated directors, managers and staff have contributed to our outstanding success, and seen sales exceed expectations. Successful marketing campaigns including the Yakult Information Service have certainly helped increase the popularity of Yakult products.

To this day, the factory built in Dandenong remains the only factory in Australia. The automatic streamline process is an example of the latest food processing equipment and is extremely efficient in producing products for the Australian and New Zealand markets. Built with such expansion in mind, the factory has seen equipment installations and upgrades over the years to increase production, ensuring that fresh Yakult is always available.

In 1994, 180,000 bottles were produced per day. Today we produce more than 300,000 bottles each day on our mesmerising filling line operating at 40,000 bottles per hour. The largest Yakult storage tanks holds 24,000 litres of Yakult concentrate and can fill close to 740,000 bottles of Yakult.

Yakult continues to enjoy phenomenal success as a top dairy case item in the supermarket, thanks to our loyal consumers.
